Adventure: and the First Video Game Easter Egg, the Gray Dot : Atari 2600 : RetroReview Adventure for the Atari 2600 was an epic 8-bit game. It came out Christmas of 1979 and went on to sell 1 million copies making it one of the Atari’s best selling games. Not only was it the dawn of the RPG, it contained video games first easter egg – the legendary gray dot (or black dot).  In the video below, we explore the realm that makes up Adventure as find the gray dot and reveal what it does. Adventure is still engaging to play today.  The limited graphics offer the imagination to take over much like reading a book, rather than going into mindless oblivion in comparison to today’s games.  The multiple levels and difficulty settings can still make it a challenge.  And the amazing thing is, after 25 years since I played it, I still knew how to navigate everything. When I was young, I really thought there were more hidden secrets, or easter eggs, in the game. And I spent hours on other games searching for other hidden items. What is HippoBytes? [video] HippoBytes is a RetroTech journal. This basically means its a “do you remember” site for geeks and gamers. But thats a lot of fun for me.  It’s meant to capture the memories of the technology revolution with an emphasis on early gaming (retrograming) from the late 70’s through the 90’s.  Not only was I extremely technical (built my own PC’s since 1991, I was lucky enough to work at a software/video game store where I was able to try all the PC and console games I could.  Sit back and enjoy the nostalgia as I document my memories of that revolution. Other items we will be pondering: 8-bit gaming and computers 16-bit gaming and computers The advances to 32-bit Vintage electronics (I can’t wait to break out Dark Tower) The evolution of magnetic media and discs.
